01/03/2008 - Great Places to Shop

Excerpt from the Orlando Sentinel article: FLIGHT PLAN. Interior Designers and their clients often travel great distances in a quest for home-furnishing perfection. by Terry Ward

Carolyn Franklin, ASID, an interior design and president of Carolyn Franklin Interior Design in Winter Park, says most of her buying trips are to the Design Center of the Americas (DCOTA) in Dania Beach near Ft. Lauderdale. Open to design trade professionals only, the center has 150 showrooms and is one of Florida's top destinations for home decor. It is particularly known for its fabric showrooms, Franklin says. Franklin also visits the High Point market in North Carolina once a year, as well as the Atlanta Decorative Arts Center and the Dallas Center Market. And New York City is one of her favorite destinations for finding antique furnishings. "They carry a different product than the DCOTA center, which is geared more for the Southern market - Miami and all points south," Franklin says, speaking recently from a JetBlue departure gate at Orlando International Airport. Franklin was on her way to New York to meet a client from Connecticut who is building a home in Orlando. "In New York, I have found some wonderful things to show my client," Franklin says. "This time we are going to look for a couple of antique items to fill in the gaps, and some lighting." Franklin's favorite places to shop include Manhattan's Design & Decorative Building, with more than 120 showrooms for the trade, as well as antique shops near 72nd and 73rd streets, and a lighting store called The Federalist in Greenwich, Conn. "It's a one-of-a-kind thing" says Frankln, referring to the objective of buying trips, "a way of giving unique individuality to a home."
